THE “TERROR” RECALLED.
PRINCE BEATEN TO DEATH. , This story was told by an eyewitness, M. Kuglicki Piottuck, and forwarded by the Berne correspondent of the Daily Telegraph: — df they know in West Europe what is happening in Russia they would understand the terrible situation of Russian landowners, who are now exposed to the unrestricted barbarism of peasants who have been intoxicated by promises that the land shall be divided among them. Brigandage is rampant, and Remains for the most part unpunished. Early in November Prince Sanguszko Avas Avalking from his castle at Slavuta to the village church. On his Avay an officer warned him not to return to the castle. A priest also gave him a similar Avarning. Nevertheless the prince returned, but immediately he re-entered the castle he Avas surrounded by soldiers. Amongst the A’isitors at the castle Avere count Rzyszoevski and his sister. Perceiving them at a win(loav, the soldiers Hred point blank at (liem. Count Rzyszocvski was Avounded. Soldiers then broke into die castle and ran amok through ail the rooms. Finding Count Rzyszoevski bleeding from several Avounds, they refused to send for the doctor, and left him to bleed miserably to death. They then shot down his sister and mutilated her body with their bayonets. Rushing Avildly from room to room, the soldiers ultimately found Prince Sangusko. They dragged him into the open, Avhere, surrounded by soldiers, he Avas driven round and round the park Avhilst his persecutors beat him Avith the butt-ends of their rifles, kicked him Avitii their heavy military boots, and prodded him Avith their bayonets. At last, overcome by fatigue, the prince sank exhausted to the ground . At this moment one of the soldiers thrust this bayonet into the price’s face, making a horrible gash across the cheek. The prince rose from the ground, but immediately received 18 bayonet thrusts in different parts of liis body. Laughing and blaspheming, the soldiers carried his body to one of the stables and pitched it upon a heap of straw. Then the pillaging continued. The contents of the castle Avere carried away or burned. The soldiers, carried away by their blood-lust, killed all the splendid Arabian horses in the price’s stables. The orgy of destruction continued for hours. This is a picture of the infamous anarchy Avhich exists in Russia under the rule of the Maximalists. Prince Sauguszko was 8!J years of age.
