NEW INTER-ISLAND TELEPHONE SERVICES.

Wellington, April 20. Sir Joseph Ward, at the opening of the new post office at Heretaunga on Saturday, indicated some important developments of the telephone system. He stated that as soon as a sufficient supply of copper wire was available at a reasonable cost, the telephone service would be established between Wellington and the South Island, in fact, between every town of the North Island and every town in the South. This he xegarded as a most important development from a business point of view. The authority of Cabinet has been obtained to carry out the work, and it was also intended to complete the automatic exchanges. He expected that they would be able to repay the whole cost of the new work in six years from the additional revenue.
