THE BIPLANE INCIDENT.
STATEMENT BY MR. GREENWOOD. Mr G. D. Greenwood, owner of Biplane, is at present staying in Wellington, his son being in camp at Trentham. Speaking on the subject of the scratching of Biplane on Tuesday for the Awapuni Gold Cup, Mr Greenwood said: — “Sportsmen who went to Palmerston to see a race between Biplane and Desert Gold did so to see two champions meeting, fit and well,” he said. “On arriving at Palmerston at 4 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, I found Biplane unfit to run ten furlongs. I therefore most reluctantly availed myself of every owner’s right by withdrawing him from the Gold Cup; “The harsh and far-reaching resolution passed by the Manawatu stewards left me no choice but to scratch ray champion for the Stakes and to leave Palmerston.” R. J. Mason returned to Wellington on Thursday with the Comedy King colt, who will not be inquired to x’uce again this season. After a few months’ spell Biplane and other membei’s of the team are to be takert to Australia in charge of Mason. Sydney, April 18. The Manawatu Racing Club’s action in connection with the scratching of Biplane has created a sensation in Turf circles here, and further developments are eagerly awaited, in view of the fact that a general adoption of the stewards’ recommendation will possibly preclude Biplane’s promised visit to Australia in the spring.
