THE WAR LOAN.
MONDAY next, 15th inst., is the closing day for. receiving investments in the War Loan. It is hoped that every one who can will subscribe in large or small amounts. The Government intends to find the money to carry on, and those who are able to subscribe and refuse to do so voluntarily will have to “shell out” compulsorily. Short of confiscation, there does not appear to be any other way open at the present than to apply compulsion to those unmoved by any other argument. It is pleasing to note, however, that this district is contributing fairly well in proportion to other centres. A further twenty millions will soon be required, and, according to the banking returns, the Dominion is holding strong for further demands. AVe believe that this loan will be fully subscribed without putting the compulsion clause into operation.
