PLEASURE V. PATRIOTISM.

(To the Editor.) Sir. —Replying to “X-Rays’ ” letter of Saturday’s issue of the “Herald. He says that the company playing “Daddy Long Legs” last week, in Foxton, deserved the patronage they received, and that the play itself was unique. He then says that, although a fair number were present, they shouldn’t be there. Now, Mr Editor, whatever takes place in Foxton, whether socials (church), of which there have been a good many of late, or patriotic concerts, or public speeches, I think in most cases the people of Foxton roll out wonderfully. The majority are a pleasure-loving people at all times, and are regular sports when it.comes to touching their pockets. Of course, a variety from the usual picture shows is required now awl again, by way of a change, and, of course, there are people who will roll along to any show at all in Foxton, if it’s only to pass away an hour or two. money seems no object. A week or two ago a parly of 30 artists journeyed from Palmerston North (in connection with the Final Battle campaign), employing no less than eight motor cars, but owing to lack of advertising, Ihese artists got a very poor hearing, about 20 people representing the audience. I don’t know whether “X-Ray” is alluding to this particular night. I might say there are a great many visiting companies that would not be missed if they stayed away from Foxton, and there are companies and shows that, are capable of thinking that anything will do for Foxton—which latter remark is upheld by the opinions of- patrons who have been “sucked in” occasionally. I agree with “X-Ray” that any show, concert or entertainment, being held in Foxton for the benefit of local causes, or in conenction with the present upheaval, should be patronised by all who can afford it, and believe in it. Outside shows should receive second consideration, as more often than not a “tin-pot” show’ usually finds its way to Foxton, and blgeds the innocent pleas-ure-lover. Trusting I am not too exaggerating on this subject, I am, etc., HADSUM.
