THE WAR LOAN.

OWING to the period allowed for receiving applications for the War Loan having' been broken into by the Ea-.vr holidays, it has been determined to extend the date for the Hosing of the loan from the Bth to the 15th of this month. " The general indications are that, .the loan will be fully subscribed, as there is plenty of money in .the, Dominion, and if all the people fully, realise their responsibilities, Sir: . Joseph Ward should be able to- announce oh the 15th instant that the amount asked for was more than subscribed. If the money is not forthcoming voluntarily,' there is provision in the War Loans Act to compel those who are in a 'position to do so, and have net recognised their responsibility, to subscribe to the loan. In a speech delivered at the Commercial Travellers’ Club, Wellington, Sir Joseph Ward made pointed reference to “financial shirkers,” and said that it would “serve (hem right if their names were placed on record by the Legislature of New Zealand, so that the whole country would know (hey had not been doing tiieir duty. If n man who was physically til shirked (he duty imposed upon him in connection with (he war, everybody knew him for what he was. The financial shirker was not entitled to any more consideration than the other soft of shirker.” Quite right, too. But we think the moneyed man should he compelled to lend some of his money to the. State irrespective of whether the loan is fully subscribed or not. Why should he he allowed to shirk his responsibilities ? Wp lippe fliat whatever the, resplt of php'ifiit Loaij—and we*hgye no doubt hut whqt thg amount asked for will be forthcoming—the financial shirker will not be allowed to escape.
