AERONAUTICAL INSTRUMENTS. The development o£ aviation has brought into existence several new lines of industrial activity, not the least of which is the production of instruments for aerial navigation, in which several instruments used in navigation at sea play their part when adapted to the newer use; but, in addition, there are many other devices in existence at the present time, and a great demand exists for others. All the, devices used in the automobile, on the dashboard and under the bonnet, are to be found in the up-to-the-minute aeroplane, and many others, too. There is the altmeter, which is a bax*ometer adapted to aviation; the inclinometer, the drift meter, the distance indicator, the barograph, the angle-of-attack indicator, the stallometer, the clinometer, and others, all of which add to the aeronautic industry and to the-piaze of details the aviator must master WOMEN TEA-BIBBERS. There is a real problem behind the übiquitous teapot among women clerks in Government departments, so roundly condemned by Mr C. J. Stewart, the Public Trustee. “I feel strongly,” he says, “that the heads of Departments and other employers should meet and discuss this problem. I put down the increase in sickness of our clerical staff—from 3-sths fp 10 per cent.—almost wholly to tea drinking. It is the duty of employers to ensure a sufficiency of food, so that the need fos the stimulant of tea may no longer exist, We have a canteen here where a girl may get a good meat and vegetable dinner for l()d, and I forbid tea to be served before five o’clock.” THE FAMOUS YACHT AMERICA. Yachtsmen will be gratified -to learn that while the sailing days of the famous cup winning schooner yacht America probably are over, it will not be consigned to the scrap heap or turned into a trading vessel. While the new owners of the America, all of whom ax-e enthusiastic Boston yachtsmen and members of the Eastern Yacht Club, have not yet decided upon the future of the America, it is probable that it will be snugly berthed m Boston or Marblehead. ( GUARDING THE KAISER. How closely the German Emperor is guarded when he travels through Belgium is told as follows by a correspondent, who has several times witnessed the Kaiser’s arrival. “Whenever the passage of the Imperial train is to take place the fact is not kndwn to the cliief railway official until the same day, and to his subordinates not until a quarter of an hour before the arrival. In the station the lines are all kept free. All workmen on this occasion, whether Belgian or German, were despatched outside, and access to the station was forbidden. This applied to all passengers as well. The military guards occupying parts of the stations and environs were ordered to leave their posts and pile their arms. The only persons allowed on the platform were the stp-ti-onmaster, his employees appointed to work the signals, and the military chief. There was no guard of honour, no manifestation whatever.”
