MOUTOA NOTES.
(Own Correspondent.) Pto, J. Woods, of the 35th Hein - foreements, arrived home yesterday for a few days’ leave. From word received to-day. Pie, W. Bowe and Pte. E. Fenwick have left New "Zealand for the front. Mrs W. H. Smith, of Linley, Monton, has received the sad intelligence of her' father's death at Christchurch. The deceased gentleman had reached the advanced age of ninety years, and had been in failing health of late, and his death was not unexpected. To Mr and Mrs Smith we extend our sympathy. Mrs G. R. Hall, late of' St. Helen’s Wellington, is at present on a visit to Moutoa. Mrs Hall is leaving New Zealand shortly for Samoa, in her professional capacity. The directors of Whitaunui, Ltd., met at Moutoa last week and journeyed out to the swamp to search for any trace of the disease that has lai(| waste the Riverdfile swamp. With the exception of a •slight j nice or two, )Vhilaupui ! s swamp is free from the pes}. Mg C. Firth, the manager, remarked, ip the course of conversation, that he considered it the most serious menace (he (lax industry had yet had to face, The annual picnic and prize-giv-ing in connect ion with (he Moutoa school will lake place on Dr. Wall’s property at Maroliri on Friday, the 22nd inst. The public have been most generous, the sum of £lO odd has been collected, and friends and business people of Foxton and Shannon have donated trophies for the different events. So, given a, fine day, old and young alike should have ap enjoyable opting. Moutoa was well pepre.sepjed' at the carnival in Shannon on Saturday last, and judging liy I lie mopi)’ traffic, everyone was there that could get away. Shannon is to he congratulated on their splendid achievement^ Shanpop lips the proud distinction of having, outside of the cities, the first female telegraph messenger on the P.O. staff,
