LEVIN- FOXTON ROAD.
SHOULD IT BE TARRED?
The Levin-Foxton road came under discussion at the Horowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday. Cr Broadbelt said the road was one mass of holes. He contended its present condition was due to skimp-' ing metal in the first place. The Engineer (Mr Malcolm) declared the next Otaki races would just about finish the road. The Chairman (Cr Monk) said they would have to face the problem of tarring the main roads in the County, and he considered this should be the first one to be tackled. Cr Ryder mentioned the success which had attended the tarring of roads in Hawke’s Bay, and Cr Law pointed to Eltham’s good example in this respect. Cr Broadbelt considered the road would be very expensive for more reasons than one. In'the first place the foundations were too narrow, and the road would have to be widened. He was strongly in favour of doing something in the way of a coating of tar, and suggested a stretch of road near the bridge as an experiment. Cr Murray considered the road was badly made in the first place. It would cost £I,OOO a mile to do —£14,000 for the road. The Chairman; That brings us face to face with the whole question of tarring the roads. Cr McLeavey: What about the toll-gates? The Chairman: We can’t go to the Minister and ask for an Order in Council to put up toll gates without delivering the goods.. We must have a scheme prepared first to show that we would spend the revenue of £I,OOO on tarring. If the riding is prepared to tackle the problem it should get the support of the Council. The matter was then allowed to drop in view of the special meeting on Saturday week to discuss the toll gates. —Chronicle.
