Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 1918. EDUCATIONAL.
TEE local State school re-opens tomorrow, after the summer vacation. Parents who have the educational welfare of their children at heart should see to it that every child of school age, physically fit, should he in attendance. Further, we would point out the necessity for punctuality. The school opens at 9 a.m., not anywhere between that hour and 10 o’clock, as some dawdling children appear to think. Punctuality should he more firmly impressed upon the pupils. The school year consists approximately of 41 weeks of five days, and each day’s study consists of five hours. For this' the State pays in salaries alone to the local school over £1,500 per year. If parents had to make up these salaries directly .out of their 'pockets probably they would see to it that not one moment of school time is wasted. The trouble is the majority don’t think, and therefore fail to recognise the great educational privileges their children enjoy. Some parents make any excuse to keep their children at home, careless or ignorant of the consequences. On the whole, they do not take the vital question of education seriously. We appeal to local parents to take a deeper interest in the educational welfare of their children this year, and to encourage punctuality and regular attendance by every means in their power.
