TOWN HALL.

LEASED TO MR. T. POWELL,

A special meeting of the Borough Council Avas'held on Thursday evening to deal with matters in connection with the Town Hull. There were present:—The Mayor (Mr John Chrystall) and Crs. Coley, Bryani, Henderson, Hurley, MeMnrrayj McColl, Stevenson, Thompson and Walker.

Mr T. Powell Availed on the Council and made an offer of £6 per Avcek for the Hall for a period of two years, under the conditions upon which tenders were recently invited. The Council went into committee, and on resuming business the following resolution avos unanimously passed, on the motion of. Crs Hujley and MeMurray: That Mr Powell’s offer to lease the Town Hall for pictures at £fi per Aveek for a period of two years be accepted. \ The Mayor took the opportunity of Avishing Mr Poavoll every success in Ids ncAV venture.

It Avas also decided, on the motion of Cr McMnrray, seconded by Cr Thompson, that the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., he communicated Avith, asking them to arrange for their representative to inspect (he Town Hall with the representatives of this Council, in order to see what is missing and repairs necessary, in accordance Avith the agreement.

Tlic arrangement just entered into with Mr Powell is a decided improvement as far as the Town Hal! Account is concerned on the agreement with the Hew Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd,, which expires at the' end of next month. Under the existing lease the rental received by the Council is £5 10s 0d per week, so that the/new arrangement will mean an increase of £2(5 per year under this head alone. The conditions of the lease have also been amended in the direction of preventing companies using movable lighted scenery from showing in the hall, and the insertion of this condition will mean a decrease of £4O per year in the .amount paid by the Council for lire insurance, so that the new lease will mean an additional £O(S per year for- the Town Hall Account, a position that is very satisfactory.
