SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT
MIRACULOUS ESCAPE FROM DEATH.
Masterton, Yesterday
A sensational accident occurred on the Rimutaka hill yesterday, in which two men had a miraculous escape from death. A horse attached to a gig oacked over an embankment some two or three hundred feet deep, the men, gig, and horse crashing through the scrub until the bottom was reached. Some passersby in motor cars witnessed the accpiickly went to the assistance of the men. AYith difficulty they descended the steep cliff, and it was then found that an elderly man was severely injured, while the other man was more or less bruised and dazed. The horse had its neck broken, and the vehicle was badly smashed about. After five or six hours’ labourious work, in which the rescuers had to dig footholds as they ascended the embankment, the injured man was brought up to the road, and afterwards conveyed to flic Greytown Hospital. It is believed he had several ribs broken, besides numerous bruises and abrasions. It is understood that the men connected with the accident are residents of Featherston.
