.Sir. —Like "Willing’’ and ‘‘One of the Public," I, too, was surprised when I saw in your paper that, a local clerk bad appealed and was temporarily < xempted after being called up in the ballot. If: I remember rightly, the appellant was one of those who, early in the war, I , 7 * ' was .urging others to enlist, and to do their bit Tor their country. What a noble and patriotic example now his own turn has come! I believe the appellant is, .»• was, an active member of the Peal Patriotic Society. Of course, I take it his resignation is in the hand- of the chairman ere now, otherwise it may cast a reflection on the genuine patriotic..members, and, do the Society (which is a .credit to the district) more harm than good. "I'lsseiilial industry!’’ Ye gods! Did one ever hoar of a more Indicron , excuse? Clerical work an essential industry! J venture to say there are dozens of returned soldier- who could, and would, take on the position until the appellant in question returned. And hits it not hem preached and proclaimed over .aid over again that we should stand hy our returned soldiers? Men who have loyally and bravely “done their bit,” and did not try to dodge duly. Let ns hope wo have still loyal and true British in our midst who tire willing to do their share. —Yours, etc*., PATJMOT.
