Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 1918. TRANSFER OF HEAD TEACHERS.
THE Education Board contemplates certain (‘Ranges in the headmastership of several schools as the result of the retirement of Mr Watson, Campbell Street School. The present proposal is that Mr Warden, first assistant at Campbell Street, be transferred as head teacher at: Ohakune, Mr Fnrric, head teacher at Ohakune, to Foxton, and Mr Jackson, bead teacher at Foxton, to Queen’s Dark. The schools mentioned are of equal grade, so in that connection there is not much to be said. It means the breaking away from old associations and extending the link of social ties. That, of course, is a personal matter, and cannot be allowed to interfere with the administrative machinery. We are of opinion that canges of head teachers .after a period of seven years in one place is desirable. We realise that every head teacher follows the course laid down for him and the school progress is marked by the periodical visitations of inspectors. But the same personality year after year is apt to veer the school into a conservative channel, whereas periodical transfers of head teachers introduces new ideas and innovations according to personality. A periodical “general coach” could not be other than beneficial to education from every point of view, and it is to be regretted that the Act does not provide for this instead of allowing head teachers, appeal boards, and school committees to override a sound principle.
