AT THE SEASIDE.
A gala day had been arranged lor New Year’s Day at the seaside, but on account of the weather, which fortunately took up during the afternoon, a large part of (he programme had to be abandoned. Foot racing for young and old, another athletic events, and an aclfuatic programme, had all been arranged. Subscriptions came in freely for prizes, and after making full provision in this connection there remained a surplus of £l2, which is to be spent on concreting the entrance to the beach from the County road—a very necessary work. Despite the gloomy weather, the seasiders were in good holiday mood, and a large portion of the programme was got off. It was decided to postpone ihe swimming events until Saturday next. The following gentlemen officiated as the committee, and are to be complimented upon their enthusiasm:— Messrs Sicely, Warden, Yortt, Lawton* May, Linklater, Hoeken, Cornfoot, Clere, Harwood, A. Dawick, Capt. Ford, Giorgi, and Hartley. The sports created plenty of excitement and amusement. The events and winners will appear in our next issue.
