Not a hundred miles from Newcastle a squad of raw recruits were being whipped into shape by a martinet of a drill sergeant. A parson, who was watching and listening intently, turned to an old soldier and inquired: “Why does the sergeant refer to his men as ‘Brown/ ‘Smith/ or ‘Robinson? 11 He says, ‘Do this, Brown/ ‘Do that, Smith.’” There was a twinkle in Geordie’s eye as he responded: “He nivvor uses ‘Christian’ names —nivvor!”
