CHARGE OF ARSON.
Gisborne, Dec. 7
In the Supreme _ Court to-day, John Sheriff Dods, who has pleaded guilty to embezzling abofft £2,000 from the Gisborne Gas Company, was further charged with arson in (allegedly) setting the company’s officer afire. The Crown representative suggested that the fire was started with the object of destroying the firm’s books, which contained evidence as to defalcations to which Dods had confessed since the fire. After five hours’ retirement, the jury disagreed, and His Honour ordered a new trial for Monday.
