AN INGENIOUS DEFENCE.

AND AN INTELLIGENT HORSE. A'local resident appeared before the Magistrate at last Court sittings on a charge of allowing his horse to wander in the public streets. He put up the ingenious defence that in order to allow his horse to wander he must have done some act —given his horse permission, in fact. “Well,” said his Worship, “the only witness as to that must be the horse. You should produce the horse.” Defendant: “I can easily do that, your Worship!” His Worship: “Then you must bring an interpreter.” Defendant: “That is easily supplied, sir. There are plenty of men here who talk horse language.” His Worship; “Yes, I know that-, unfortunately for them, when they come before me I have to punish them for it. Tne intelligent equine, no doubt a lenial descendant of those wonderful animals immortalised by Dean Swift, was not produced, and the owner was mucted in a fine of 5s and costs 7s.
