Thousands of Avedding-rings are being shipped all over the United States by the manufacturing jeAvcllers of New York, in anticipation of the rush of Avar Aveddings expected to accompany the draft of American’s “first 600,000.” In Cuba, two hours before a paper is distributed, a copy must be sent, with the editor’s name, to the Government, and one to the censor. When the paper is returned Avith the censor’s endorsement the paper may go to the public. There are upAvards of 80,000 inhabitants on the slopes and skirts of Vesuvius. If it Avere not for the fertilising effect of the volcanic products not more than one-tenth of that number avouUl be able to find means of subsistence there. The heat developed by the firing of heavy guns is remarkable. During some recent tests a gun that had been fired seventy-five times melted solder placed upon the chase, while another Avas hot enough to soften lead, indicating a temperature of GOOdeg. Fahr. “To take one doAA’ii a peg” is an allusion to loAvering a ship’s flag, which is regulated by the pegs to Avhich the line is fastened on deck. The higher a ship’s colours are raised in saluting the greater the honour. Hence to take them doAvn a peg is to loAver the dignity. The income tax Avas originally granted by Parliament, in the face of fierce opposition, in 1798, “as in and for the prosecution of the Avar” against France. It Avas repealed in 1816, and reimposed in 1842, nominally for three years only, at 7d in the £, Subsequently it Avas granted for terms of three years, one year, and seven years. Honesty is a prevailing virtue among most Chinamen. Some of them, in their native toAvns and cities, often leave their places of business unguarded Avhile they go off for half an hour or more. Should customers arrive in the meantime, they find the prices of goods plainly marked, select Avhat they want, and leave the money for them.
