MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Manawatu County Council held its monthly meeting on Tuesday. Present: Crs Sir James Wilson (chairman), B. Gray, W, E. Barber, J, S, Penny, W. J. Phillips, H. H. Hunt, and H. G. Hammond. COUNTY FUNDS. General account, dr., £3,5G7 Is 4d; Loan account, cr., £1,301 10s 7d, Amounts available for expenditure to March 31st next; Sandon £261 17s Gd, Mt. Stewart £285 3s Bd, Waitohi £266 19s Id, Rongotea £159 16s Id, Carnarvon £633 3s sd, Kawa Kawa £BB 2s lOd. Over-ex-pended : Awahou £95 3s 3d. DRAINAGE DISTRICT. In response to a petition of a majority of ratepayers of the district affected, steps are to be taken to constitute a drainage district (to be known as the Oroua Downs Drainage District). THANKS. - The Council tendered thanks to the Hon. O. Samuel and Mr E. Newman, M.P.,' for the trouble they took in getting the Manawatu County Local Bill put through ■ both Ho uses of Parliament. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT. The volume of traffic was very much interfered with by the continuance of the shipping strike, and the earnings show a debit of £46 5s 7d for the month’s working. The chief items of traffic were: Minerals 1741 tons, merchandise 131 tons, manure 652 tons, cheese and butter 771 tons, limber 24,000 feet. Fares amounted to £4 4s lid. On the 17th ultimo the locomotive Manawatu ran into a tree blown across the lino near Oroua Downs. The brakes failed to act in time, owing to the amount of grass on the line. The head lamp was bvok-' on, but no other damage was done. The windmill pump at Sanson shed has had to be replaced at a cost of £2 18s fid. The platform of the Ohakea shod requires renewing. It would lie advisable to have this done as soon as possible, as the wool season has commenced. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Awahou Riding. —Metal has been carted and weak places patched up on the Whirokino and Elkins-Motu-iti roads. During last month Councillor Barber and myself mot the ratepayers in the Marotiri district for the purpose of raising a loan of £2,000 to form and metal the Kari Kari and Bowe’s roads. After a good deal of discussion on the matter, several of the ratepayers present signed the petition in favour of metalling the roads in the Marotiri district.
