DEFENCE EXPENDITURE.
The revelations regarding the vastness of the expenditure incui’red by the Defence Department recently made in Parliament are already leading to a general enquiry in anticipation of the commission on expenditure, which it is the intention of the Government to set up at an early date. The pruning knife has fallen on .the District Medical Boards, with the result that these bodies no longer perambulate the country with military dentists. The latter officials have been dispensed with, as from October 31st, and the work will be done in the respective camps. J'The gentlemen concerned ,will each be given, a month’s leave on full pay. Whether they revert to their civilian status or report to camp for duty is riot yet known. It is believed that the pruning knife will not stop at this, and further developments may be expected.
