Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1917. MR, P. C. WEBB, M.P., RESIGNS.
MR, P. C. WEBB, M.P. for Grey, sent the following letter to the Speaker of the House: —“Shv —I beg to tender my resignation as a member of the House of Representatives, to take effect as from one week after the close of the present session. I take this step because it is abundantly clear from the nature of the petitions and telegrams received from every part of my electorate, and from the gold and coal miners throughout New Zealand, that the general interests of the electors and those other special interests should not be unrepresented m Parliament,” Mr Webb was called up in the ballot for military sen ice. An appeal for exemption was made on his behalf ray Mr McCombs, representing Mr Webb’s constituents. The Military Service Board held that Mr Webb was not indispensible in Parliament, and that the mining interests would not suffer during the period he would be at the front serving his King and country ip the greater crisis. ■ If Mr Webb puts the same amount of energy into his work as a soldier as in his battle for Labour—extremist though he is—he should make his mark. Anyhow, it will afford him golden opportunities of studying Hunnish frightfulness, and impress him with the fact that this war is being fought to preserve that liberty and freedom which he professes to champion. A candidate will no doubt be forthcoming to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr Webb. It is inconceivable that Mr Webb should think that his reclection, if he again offers himself for the vacancy, will relieve him of his military services.
