ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES.
FIVE CONVICTIONS
At the local Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr W, 6. K. Kenriek, S.M., George Gupwell, who did not appear, was charged with being found on licensed premises—Family Hotel —on Sunday, September 30th. Constable O.Donoghue stated that at about 6,45 p.m. on the date in question, in company with Constable Woods, he saw defendant come out of the Family Hotel, When questioned, Gupwell said he had been in the hotel to see about getting some rabbits, but later admitted he was looking for drink, A fine of 20s, with costs 7s, was imposed. Alfred Hutchison, Harold Simms, Keri Makaraika, and Hui Arangi, were charged with being found on licensed premises—Manawatu Hotel —on Sunday, October 7th. None of the defendants appeared. Constable Woods stated that at 8 a.m. on October 7th he saw the four defendants go into the Manawatu Hotel.. He followed and met the two Natives coming out. The other two were inside, and the licensee was ordering them out when he arrived. The bar was closed. They all admitted they had no excuse. Makaraika was convicted for a similar offence two months ago.
The Magistrate fined Makaraika 40s, Avith costs 7s, and in the other cases inflicted fines of 20s each, Avith costs 7s.
