THE HOWARD ELLIOTT ASSAULT.
Auckland, Oct, 16. At the Police Court this morning Gunner Charles Clements and Herbert M’Entree were charged with having assaulted Howard Elliott by striking him with a stick. The Court was crowded, and there was hooting and cheering when the accused were called. The Magistrate ordered the Court to be cleared. Counsel for accused asked for an adjournment to obtain evidence from Wellington. The Court granted a remand for one week. MR. ELLIOTT KEEPS HIS APPOINTMENT. ADDRESSES MEETING IN TOWN HALL. The assault on Mr Elliott took place when he was about to leave his residence for the Protestant Political Association’s meeting at the Town Hall. He was prevented from taking his place on the platform at the opening of the meeting. He arrived some time after the meeting commenced, but in ample time to deliver his speech, which 'was the last on the programme. The chairman, Mr S. M. MooreJones, made the following statement: —“I have a very unpleasant announcement to make. You will have noticed that the Rev. Howard Elliott was not with us when we walked on to the platform before the commencement of the meeting. I am informed that he has since arrived, and that the cause of the delay. was an attack that was made upon him at his gate as he was leaving his house. (Cries of Shame! Shame) I will leave the matter at that, and you will draw your own conclusions.” The chairman’s announcement created some sensation amongst the audience, but it soon subsided, and the meeting proceeded. When Mr Elliott, who received an ovation on rising, spoke he made passing reference to the incident that had been announced by the chairman, and then proceeded with his speech.
