According to the Japan Times, (ho Bureau of Forestry of the Department of Agriculture and Commerce reports that during the first six months of 1917 the export of forest products from Japan amounted to 26,715,308 you, and the import during the same period was 11,700,391 yen, showing a balance in favour of export of 10,014,097 yen. The export of the first six months of the year shows an increase of 4,205,714 yen over the figure of the first six months of 1910.
Some of the exported forest products in the first six months of the year are as follow; — Oak'lumbor, 3,455,000 yen; match splints and match boxes, 005,000 yen; charcoal, 144,000 yen; cortinellus shiitake, 990,020 yen; camphor, 2,899,000 yen; match, 10,512,000 yen; chip braids, 316,000 yen; cigarette mouthpieces and pipes, 108,000 yen; willow baskets and bags, 224,000 yen; umbrella and parasol bandies 361,000 yen; furniture, 838,000 yen; and lacquer wares, 444,000 yen. The Russian'Gbvernmcnt formerly announced that safety matches would be allowed to be imported to the extent of 420,000,000 eases, fi’ee of duty, and on July 25th it declared that applications for the import of safety matches free of duty shoul be made to the Department of Finance prior to September. 80th, Russian calendar, and the shipments permitted should be made befoi’e November 30th.
Despite the fact that the product of sulphur in Japan increased by 50 per cent, since the outbreak of the Avar, the demand is uoav far exceeding the supply, and in many industries the shortage of the sulphur is keenly felt.
