SOUTH AFRICAN RECRUITING.

A STATEMENT regarding the results of recruiting in the South African Union was recently made by Colonel Mentz, Acting-Minister for Defence. He said that out of 53,793 men eligible for service on the Rand, 21,000 had enlisted up to June 30th. That was 40 per cent. The total number of eligible men in the Union who had enlisted was 06,159, 0r'25.4 per cent., which, witli men who had enlisted in other units, made 70,150. That being so, he did not think it advisable that they should -try to raise new formations. Rather should they try to maintain a reserve of the South African .Brigade, so that they might maintain the identity of the brigade.
