An interesting return laid on the table of the House of Representatives on Monday night by Sir James Allen showed the occupations of all ranks embarked for active service up to and including the 28th Rein- - forcemeats. The larger numbers in the return are mentioned below: — Farmers and farm hands .. 18,390 Labourers 11,091 Clerks , 5,443 Carpenters 2,584 Bushmen 1,627 Miners 1,016 Engineers 1,553 Railway employees 1,520 Blacksmiths and farriers .. 1,190 Butchers 1,087 Motor drivers and mechanics 1,087 Seamen 1,017 Bakers and cooks 979 Plumbers ■ 701 Grocers 724 Dairy factory employees ... 712 Other figures are: —Artists 23, brewers and bottlers 44, chemists 310, dentists 140, gum sorters and diggers 100, horse trainers and jockeys 590, hotel employees 394, hotelkeepers 10, journalists and reporters 01, lawyers 161, medical practitioners 89, ministers and clergymen 42, missionaries 18, musicians 51, printers, etc., 597, rabbiters 44, tramway employees 198, commercial travellers 521, wireless operators 10, woolsortcrs, etc., 095.
