DEMAND FOR COMPENSATION. A number of hotel licensees owning their properties, waited on the Prime Minister to state the position as to hotel values, and to discuss the question of. relief in the way of compensation. They slated (hat the reduced hours would ruin some lic-ensee-owners. Records of the bar takings in some cases showed 40 to GO per cent, received betwefti the hours of 0 and 10 p.m. The curtailment of hours without compensation, it was claimed, was equivalent to the confiscation of their property. If the Licensing Bill was put on the Statute Book a clause should he included providing for compensation for owner-licensees on a basis to be assessed by the Compensation Court.

Air Massey said he was sorry that the position of publicans, especially freeholders, had not been placed before the House. He assured the deputation that those concerned would be given an opportunity of placing their views before the Statutes Revision Committee prior to the Bill being dealt with by the Legislative Council. __
