FINANCIAL SHIRKERS.

The question was raised in the House of Representatives on Tuesday night as to whether the compulsory loan clauses of the Financial Bill are to be enforced, in view of the over-subscription of the loan. Sir •Joseph Ward said, speaking generally, the country had done so well that there need be' no serious trouble anticipated for anybody under the compulsory clauses unless they are persistent shirkers, whom the country will expect to be dealt with. “The result of the loan is the best answer to any fear as to how these clauses are going to. operate in connection with the obtaining of money for war loan purposes. The primary purpose of the compulsory clauses is not to raise money. Let us keep ii good lever for extracting the teeth of the financial shirker.”
