Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1917. ROAD METAL.
THE upkeep of I lie local borough roads is a cosily item, due io the faci lliat 1 here are no metal pits* or ridges in the locality, The'melal is olilainod from Tiakilalmna and railed to Coxian, ’which makes it very costly. This year the Council has not been able to procure ,sufficient to meet maintenance requirements. At last meeting- of: the Council it was decided to go further afield for a trial order of Belmont crushed metal. A discussion took place as to the wearing merits of the metal. Some Councillors were of opinio!] that the Tiakitahuna pit metal was not up to the mark, and a change was desirable, Cy pointed out that any metal would quickly disappear unless it was spread to a sufficient depth. There is common sense in this argument. Would, however, point out to the Cojmdj (hat the Manawatu County Council C making financial arrangements to continue the tramway into the bed of the Rangitikei river, where there is a limitless supply of first-class metal, In view of this we would suggest that the
Council eon for with the County and see whether it would not pay the Council to come to some arrangement in respect to future supplies from this source.
