ALIENS IN AUSTRALIA.
There are at present interned in Australia 3,000 alien enemies. Immediately after the outbreak of the war the Government took steps- to prevent the departure of alien enemies from Australia. The Defence authorities at once commenced to place in internment camps those persons who were known to be members of, or liable for service in, the forces of the enemy countries. This policy has been extended to alien enemies who are not members of the forces of the enemy, and it is believed that all alien enemies whoso conduct has been unsatisfactory are interned. The number of alien enemies resident in Australia at the outbreak of, the war, who are now interned, exceeds 2,000. Alien enemies found on enemy ships seized as prizes, or on British or neutral ships arriving at Australian ports, now totalling 1,000, were also interned. The . following restrictions have been placed on alien enemies who were left at liberty:—(a) They arc required to give parole not to take any hostile action; (1)) they are required to report to the police; (c) they are forbidden, unless they obtain special permission, to be in possession of arms, ammunition, or explosives, cameras, codes, or cyphers, naval or military handbooks or maps, .inflammable liquids, carrier pigeons, motor vehicles, signalling apparatus, telephones, motorboats, or yachts; (d) they are forbidden to enter wharves, docks, or ships; (e) they are forbidden to change their names without the permission of the Minister for Defence; (f) they arc forbidden to leave the Commonwealth without obtaining permission of the military authorities.
