LEGISLATION now before tlio Commonweauth Parliament makes provision .('or (ha strengthening of the conditions under which, foreign - crs may be naturalised. The law is to ho altered so that a person seeking British nationality must advertise ids intention to apply tor a certificate, and produce to the Minister cert ideates of character from three natural-born British subjects, two of whom must be householders and, one either a justice of the peace, a postmaster, school teacher, or officer of police. The applicant must also satisfy the Minister that he is able to read and write English, and he must renounce his allegiance to the country of which he was a subject, Another clause provides that a person, not being a natural-born British subject, whose father or mother is naturalised, and who has at any time during infancy lived in Australia, may bo deemed to be naturalised.
