THE MESSINES EXPLOSION.

It seems probable that we shall have an opportunity of seeing something of the great mine explosion on the cinematograph. A coup for which the'Prime Minister was awakened from his slumbers must have been well stage-managed. In the cinematograph war pictures already shown some of the night scenes were among the most effective of all. It has been remarked that the nearest approach to the Wytschaete cataclysm was the blowing up of Flood Rock in Hell Gate, New York, in 1885, with 1-10 tons of explosives. The quantity used on Thursday was 450 tons. But the science of explosives has advanced during the past thirty years, and the ammonal used in Belgium is nearly twice as powerful as the dynamite of 1885.
