SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the local State School Commit lee was held la-t night. Present: Messrs Ilornblow (chairman), Rev. Brodin, Belly, McMurray, J. Parker, Woods, Perreau and S, Read. An apology wib received from Mr Hussey. Correspondence of a formal nature ms received from the Board, re leave of ab-ence to MBs Price on account of' -Jckne--. Lo October 14th; that arrangements are being made for an efficient female teacher to take Mr Aitkon’s place on the staff, but she will not bo able to take up her duties until the school rc-opens after the term holidays. The Secretary reported Hint no reply or acknowledgment had yet been received from the Board re cheque for £2O forwarded to Hie Board for subsidy purposes. The head teacher wrote, slating that under the new Depart mental regulations only mu' report need be submitted by an inspector, and this will be dune after the next visit. The letter further stilled Unit matters of a technical character discussed with the staff by the inspector had been entered in the Log Book, and were confidential to Hie staff. No records were withheld from the Committee that they were entitled lo peruse. The Chairman said the Committee were entitled, under Regulation 7, to inspect siII records, class registers, and reports, at any reasonable time, except the ordinary school hours. This did not apply, however, to comments and instructions entered by :in inspector in the Log Bool;, as such notes frequently contain no commendation bn), only comments on (eehnieal mailers, indieations of weaknesses discovered, and reeommendalioii- for improvement. As they were not intended to he a report on the -ehool, the inspectors desire (hem lo he considered confidential lo Hie teacher. As (he Committee was, however, directly and indirectly responsible tor the educational welfare of (he children, if was as well to he conversant with everything other than that of a confidential nature that transpired. The head leaeher placed no obstacle in the Conmiillee’s way in this connection. Air Bead 'reported upon repairs effected, and was accorded a vole of thanks. The .Secretary was authorised (o write the Town Clerk', informing Hie Council Hint the Committee desired to wait upon flint body at its next meeting in reference to sanitation charge. The Committee endorsed the N.Z. Educational Institute’s circular re the early (dosing of hotels, and decided to communicate with Hie Minister for Education and member for the district on the subject. A vole of appreeiaiion was passed to Hie scholars for voluntary subscription of £0 to Hie fund for (he relief of children who suffered in London as a result of the air raid. It was resolved to write Hie Board asking for suggestions lo deal with the pnriliealion of lank water for drinking purposes at-the school. Messrs Woods and Perreau reported on (heir visit to Hie school. Messrs Bev. Bredin and Belly wore appointed visitors for the month. The head teacher reported the average attendances for (he'month were 338, 328.8, 325.7, 20!). The average for the whole period was 322.8, out of an average roll of 353. The present roll number is 383, Colds had militated against improved attendance.
