Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, JULY 31, 1917. SHANNON BOROUGH ELECTION.
THE fust election of a Mayor and' eight Councillors for the recently constituted borough of Shannon will take place towards the end of next month. Naturally, the Shannon folk are beginning to work up a little excitement, and the first polling will be a rod letter day in the history of, the township. On Friday night a meeting of those in favour of labour representation on the Council was held, and eight candidates were selected, together with a Labour mayoral candidate, Mr W. Murdoch. The next step will be to submit a policy for the consideration of the electors. Mr Murdoch, the selected Labour candidate for the Mayoralty, has taken a very keen interest in the initial steps which brought about the constitution of the borough. He is an energetic citizen, and is not lacking in personal ambition, and will not be found backward in making the pace. Mr P. J, Hennessy, at the request of a number of influential residents, has consented to offer his. services for the Mayoralty, Mr Hennessy has had considerable experience in local body government. He has served Foxton as a Councillor and Mayor, was for years a member of the local school committee, and member of the Chamber of Commerce. He, with others, was responsible for the reconstitution of the Foxton Harbour Board, and is its chairman. The public are aware of'the long struggle in which he engaged with successive ministries and the Railway Department to obtain for the port its natural heritage, He is familiar with all the intricacies of municipal law, and the residents of Shannon would be safeguarding their own interests in electing Mr Hennessy as their first executive head. He does not pose for the limelight and wild-cap schemes of extravagance would receive short shift from him. The residents of Shannon are fortunate in being able to call upon his services, and they will, in our opinion, be well advised to elect him as their first Mayor. Of course, he is only one of nine, but Ms public experience
and general knowledge should be invaluable to the Council during its initial stages.
