HYDRO-ELECTRIC ENERGY.
REPRESENTATIVE CONFERENCE. A meeting of delegates of local bodies and Chambers of Commerce between Olaki and Wanganui was held under the auspices of the Palmerston Chamber of Commei’cc at Palmerston yesterday to further discuss the hydro-electric, requirements of this coast. Mr T. R, Hodder (president of the Chamber) occupied the chair, and there were also present; Messrs J. A. Nash, A. Seifert, E. 11. Crabb (Palmerston), J. Chrystall (Foxton), F. C. Wilson (Marlon), A. Harris, Mackay and Talboys (Wanganui), H. Sinclair (Pohangina), W. G. Pearce (Oroua), Mr W. McKenzie acted as secret:,! ry. The Chairman said the meeting was the outcome of one held some time ago. It was (hen decided to send out to the towns on tin’s coast to find out the requirements for electric energy. Since then they had found out that a Government official was at work on a similar mission. However, all the places circularised had sent in approximate estimates of their requirements. The figures of the estimated power required were as' follows: — h.p. Wanganui and suburbs 3,000 Manawatu County 2,000 Olaki Town Board 100 Feifiling (qualified?) 500 Marlon Borough 250 Shannon 250 Foxton 1,500 Palmerston North 3,000 Mr Nash moved: “That this conference representing the various local bodies set up a deputation to wait on the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, and the Minister for Public Works, such deputation to consist of those present and delegates from all local bodies, llaxmillers, dairy factories, industries, Chambers of Commerce, each town between Wanganui and Otaki to arrange its own delegate and remit names to the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, the M.P’s. for the various districts to be invited,” Mr Mackay (Mayor of Wanganui) seconded the motion. Mr Chrystall (Foxton) said his town was more interested in the scheme than any other of its size, because of the large amount of power that woidd be used by 11axmillers. What (hey wanted was some idea of the cost of the power. Mr Nash’s motion was carried, and the dale of the deputation was fixed for Monday, August 13th, at 3 p.m.
