Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, JULY 28, 1617. NIGHT CLASSES FOR WOODWORK.
TECHNICAL classes in woodwork (for boys) and cookery (for girls) have been in existence in Foxton under the control of the technical department of the Education Board for some time past. The Board’s instructors give one lesson per week in each division. The attendance of school pupils is compulsory, and forms part of the school curriculum. The classes have had a very beneficial effect upon the pupils in their home life, and (be knowledge obtained will stand to them in the years to come. The classes are well equipped with all the necessary paraphernalia, and instruction is thorough both in theory and practice. Now, there are plenty of local young fellows and men advanced'in -years who do not know how to handle tools properly, and who could; under the guidance of an instructor, .become expert in making up, in spare time, all kinds of useful furniture--and appointments for their homes. The Education Act (provides the machinery for such classes, and the Education Board the experts to give instruction. They are denominated continuation classes. The Rev. Harding, who has been connected with similar classes elsewhere, has been moving in the direction of forming a woodwork class locally, and is canvassing for names to make up the required number. In this connection he is being assisted by the local head teacher of the State school. W T e hope their joint efforts will meet with success, and that such a class will be an established fact in the near future.
