NINTH BALLOT.

LOCAL NAMES. The result of the 9th ballot taken under the Military Service Act from among members of the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve for filling vacancies in the 33rd Reinforcements, mobilising two months hence, was issued in the form of a Gazette Extraordinary on Tuesday night. The vacancies have been caused by the failure of voluntary recruiting to produce the required number of men, the actual shortage being 1,802, the second largest yet experienced. To meet this, 8,117 men have been called up, the proportion being 41 to every vacancy to he Idled. The object in drawing such a large number is to allow a sufficient margin for exemptions on various grounds and rejections on account of medical unfitness. In the Bth ballot the proportion was the same, in the 7th 5 to 1, in the (ith 4 to 1, and in the preceding ballots 3 to 1. The numbers of men drawn in the various ballots to date have been as under: — Ist Ballot, November, 1910 4,000 2nd Ballot, December,'l9lo 3,000 3rd Ballot, January, 1917 3,000 4th Ballot (double), Feb. 1917 0,807 oih Ballot, .March, 1917 4,503 01 h Ballot, April, 1917 4,812 7th Ballot, May, 1917 8,530 81 h Ballot, June, 1917 8,545 9th Ballot, June, 1917 8,117 Toiul -5:1,974 In the nine ballots that have taken place, 51,947 members of the First Division have thus been called ii)) to lid some 13,900 vacancies in (he 23rd to 33rd Reinforcements inclusive. The First Division, which originally totalled 84,980 men, has also been considerably drawn on by voluntary enlistment. At the conclusion of the Bth ballot on 30th May the total number remaining was 39,095. This total has now been further reduced by the 8,117 men called up in (he 9th ballot and the voluntary enlistment of First Division Reservists since 201 h May. The total number now remaining is thus below 22,500, which - at the present rale of exhaustion should prove Miflicient for another two ballots, leaving some 0,000 still over.
