SIR JOHN FINDLAY AND MR HERDMAN.

Sir John Findlay is one of the interesting personages of the House, and members are wondering where he is going to be in polities, and what lie is going to do, says a Parliamentary correspondent. As to what he is going to do one thing is plain, and that is that he is going to make things lively for Mr Hcrdmaii. The hitler gentleman recently indulged in some severe criticism of the speech that was made by Sir John Findlay in defence of Mr Webb, M.P. Sir John replied, and gave “as good as he got,” hut he is not going to let it end there. It is commonly reported that ere long Air llerdmau will Ik* made a Supreme Court Judge, and in that connection this is how Sir John carries the war into the enemy’s camp. He has given notice of the following motion: — “That, as vacancies are likely to arise shortly in the Supremo Court Bench, and as it is in the host interests of this country that (he high standard of legal attainment and judicial judgment hitherto so uniformly displayed by that Bench should he maintained, this lion. House is of opinion that no barrister should be appointed to (he office of Supreme Court Judge merely or mainly been use he has-in the past occupied, or does at the time of the proposed appointment occupy, the position of a .Minister of the Crown. And this hon. House is further and consequently of opinion that the para mount, test of Illness prescribed by the Public Service Act should he applied in connection with any such proposed appointment, so that no past, or present member of any Cabinet should he appointed to (he high office of a Supreme Court Judge whoso qualifications (were lie a private barrister) would not have entitled him to such appointment.” This motion may he described as fairly “hot coffee,” and the knight appears to he right out for the prospective judge’s scalp.
