A GERMAN PROPHET IN 1887.
There were prophets oven in Germany. Dur. Rudolf Sulim, Professor of Law at Leipsic, described the new German spirit as he saw it growing in 1887. Speaking of the philosophy which banishes God from the universe in the interests of materialistic science, he wrote: — “A terrible morality is the outcome of this theory, and already there is no lack of voices that openly defend it. This morality runs thus: ‘The struggle for existence is the law of the universe, and the law of evolution. In (he struggle for existence the small aud the weak, those who arc unworthy of existence, will he destroyed, but the large aud the strong, who arc capable of existence and of a future, will survive. This struggle for existence is the great relining fire which purities 1 lie world. Therefore go forth into the strife with nil your power. Take a path for yourself, and you will be the nobler aud the stronger and the worthier for it; Go forth aud tread down to the utmost the wretched and the small, and you, too, will help to work out the one groat problem of the world's history! The powers of the individual are not bis that he may servo, but that he may slay his neighbour. Whosoever survives in the struggle has Right on his side. Alight is Right. The morality, of Christ is confronted by (he morality of Anti-Christ. This new gospel,” Professor Sohm added, “finds among the representatives of our modern culture more reverent hearers than the Gospel of redemption through .Jesus Christ.”
