MOUTOA NOTES.

[Our Own Correspondent.]

The recent floods in the Manawufii river have made serious en(•roaelinienl on Mr Pilot’s properly, litis side of.' life Shannon bridge. A working 1 boo, consisting of Messrs I’iggot and son, \V. Barber and sons, Stiles, Saunders, IT. Hies and sons, Lash, Shaw, Coley and Boswell, worked like trogans and creeled a temporary bank to keep the Hood waters baek. A permannet stop-hank is now in course of construction.

It takes a Spartan courage to farm land the other side of the Shannon bridge. The floods just sweep over, and leave the land for weeks after covered with silt. A very successful send-off last night was given to Rifleman V. Me 7 Dowell, 281 h K’einforcements, and Driver M. Spring, N.Z.KA., 28th Reinforcements, in the Moutoa school. A large number of friends and relatives gathered to bid the “boys" farewell and God speed. The guests were presented with a wristlet watch each as a memento of this occasion. Mr Shaw made the presentation, and wished them a safe return. Mr Galland also endorsed Mr Shaw’s remarks. The boys suitably responded. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” terminated a very pleasant evening. Items were contributed by Mr 11. Macdonald, “Mother of Men”; Mrs Davey, “So Long, Letty”; Mr Galland, “A Perfect Day”; Miss Eennn, “Speak to Me”; and a duet by Mavis and John Shaw, “Around the Maypole." Mrs Luke, the Mayoress of Wellington, has written the secretary of the Ladies’ Guild (Mrs J. Galland) for a subscription towards the purchase of a motor car for the use of the nurses engaged at Trentham hospital. It should meet with a ready response.
