SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the local State School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs llornhlow (chairman), McMurray, Hussey, Parker, Perreau, S. Read, and "Woods. An apology for absence was received from the Rev. Mr Bredin. Correspondence was received from the Board re Arbour Day and payment of subsidy, £2 18s (id, to head teacher, re purchase of trees, etc., for the school garden. The Chairman reported that a tender had been received from Mr McDermott for concreting the front path and assembly. The price was bevond the Committee's finances, and could not be entertained. Mr Parker said he had interviewed Mr T. Cooke re the work, and the latter said he would be prepared to asphalt the path, ft was decided to ask Mr Cooke to meet a sub-com-mittee consisting of the Chairman, Secretary and Messrs Woods and Read, at the school, at 12.15 p.m, on Wednesday. The Committee to have power to act. It was stated by one member that in view ot (he children's assembly in Iront ot the school each day this portion ot the ground should be dry, and it possible (lie assembly should be concreted. The Chairman said, in his opinion the children were* keptstanding 100 long at the assembly. If any speechifying was necessary, it could he done cither in the quadrangle, out of the weather, or in the class rooms. In the opinion of other members, too much time was taken up in this connection. The head teacher reported as follows for the past month: —The averages for the past four weeks were 342.4, 332.(5, 340.!), 310.0. The average for the whole period wic 340.7, out of an average roll of 308.5, or 02 per cent, of the roll number. The present roll number is 300. The senior inspector, Mr Strong, visited Ihe school on May 30th. Besides “notes confidential to the staff,” Iho following “general” entry was made hy the inspector: “The school is being well con-, ducted, and there were evidences of sound work in ail Ihe rooms. There appears to he no doubt al all that the head teacher and his stall arc cnlhusiasfic and energetic workers; all appeared to me to be anxious lo do 1 heir hesl for (he fjeholars. Buildings: In the main these are in good order; hut a bicycle shed is badly needed. 1 would suggest the School Committee might organise a working hee lo do what is Avanted, in that ease only (he material would be required to be bought.” Mr Eraser, Board member, visited Ihe school recently, and desires me to stale that it would lie advisable for the Committee lo apply to the Board, pointing out the necessity fur certain work. As 1 previously pointed ■ out, 1 would he pleased to organise an effort to assist in carrying out necessary work. The Chairman said application had been made to the Board on the Board Chairman's recommendation for the erection of a bicycle stand, but the Board would mil sanction same. Structural defects lo the building caused the water to c.omc in, a new tank was required, also a Hue for the stove in the teachers’ room. It was resolved lo ask Ihe Board to carry out this work. 11 was resolved -to peruse the inspector's report and log book al next meeting, and the reporl was adopted. It was resolved to inform the caretaker Iha I his dulics are not being carried out lo the satisfaction of the Committee. Messrs Read and Parker were appointed visitors for the month. Accounts were passed for payment, find the meeting rose.
