Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 1917. CIVIC AFFAIRS.

IN conversation with the Rev, Father Corley, our representative was impressed with the new parish priest's ideas in connection with civic a Hairs. Father Corley is a native of stricken Belgium, and after Jinishing Ids education on the Continent, he was sent to the United States, where lie spent some Jifteen years prior to his removal to New Zealand a few months ago. Father Corley is proud to claim American citizenship. He is embued with many American ideas in reference to municipal activities. He is very favourably impressed with New Zealand —its climate, magnificent scenery, and people. He was surprised to Jiutl that our little town was without a water supply —so essential to the health and prosperity of the community. He is anxious to assist, so far as his church is concerned, in any scheme which will add to the improved civic environment of Foxton, With this object in view, he has forwarded a letter to (he Council, offering to level and put down an asphalt footpath fronting (he church properly in Cook and Johnston Streets, provided the Council, on its part, will construct the concrete kerbing. The construction of the side-walk as suggested is a costly undertaking, and it would he many years before this work is undertaken by the Council. In view of the fact that the Council will be relieved of making the footpath, we believe it will readily do what is asked. Chains of concrete kirbing have been put down along other unformed footpaths, but in this case the cost of the completed path will not have to be considered by the Council. We are also informed that a beautifying scheme is in hand so far as tiie church is concerned.
