EIGHTH BALLOT.
8,545 MEN CALLED UP TO MAKE UP SHORTAGES. The result of (lie Eighth Billiot taken under the Military Service Aet from‘among members of (he First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve for tilling vaeaneies in the 32nd Reinforcements, mobilising two months hence, was issued in the form of a Gazette Extraordinary yesterday. The vacancies have been caused by the failure of voluntary recruiting to produce the required number of men, 'he actual shortage being 1808, which is larger than for any preceding draft. To meet this, 8,545 men have been called up, the proportion living 41 to every vacancy to be tilled. The object for drawing such a number is to allow a sufficient margin for exemptions on various grounds and rejections on account of medical unlitness. In the Seventh Ballot the proportion was 5 to .1, in the Sixth Ballot 4 to .1, and in the preceding ballots 3 to 1, In the eight ballots that have 1 already taken place, 1it.857 members of the First Division have thus been called up to till some 12,100 vacancies in (he 23rd to .32nd Reinforcements inclusive. The First Division, which originally totalled 81,08(i men, has also been considerably drawn upon by voluntary enlistment, At the conclusion of the Seventh Ballot on 3rd May the total number remaining in the First Division was 30,(120. This number lias now been further reduced by the 8,545 men called up in the Eighth Ballot and the voluntary enlistment of^ First Division men since 3rd May. The total number now remaining in the First Division is thus below 31,000, which at the present rate of exhaustion should only prove sufficient for another three ballots, leaving a few thousand still over. The number of men drawn in the various ballots to date have been as under: — Ist Ballot, November, TDIG, 1,000 2nd Ballot, December, fOKi, 3,000 3rd Ballot, January, 1017, 3,000 4th Ballot (double, Feb.
