PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL.
A TirOE.RITCESS. It is only a few weeks ago that a. public meeting convened by the local Patriotic Society, decided (./ hol'd a Patriotic Carnival to supplement the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Sub-committee> were set up to carry out details, and each committee moved rapidly. App<*hls were made for trophies, donations, live stock, produce and food stuffs. Iho response in each case was generous. Several merchant firms donated £25 each, the Racing Club £25 and several millers donated hemp to I lie value approximately of £00 —yet to be disposed of. Sheep, a Jersey heifer, Shetland pony, potillry, and other gilts, came in galore. The. success o! the I unction depended upon a line day, and this the fates provided. Although the weather wa.- overcast, the day was mild and dry under loot at the course. The total day s takings will, it. is anticipated, reach £SO0 — a record Cor any open air allair yet held locally. THE PROCKSSRtN. Shortly after R! a.m. people began to assemble in Mam Si reel, llm gorgeously attired coloured gentlemen representing 1 Ihe Bark I own Band, under the i-omlm-tor-hip ol Jlr Wain weight, who conducted his band with a pig's bladder, filled in time. The medly of noises h'om the cxl raurdiimry instruments, to say nothing ol' the big drum, put Em public in good humour. The procession formed up in front j)f the Municipal Chambers. The ma.islml, Mr Mc.Murray, was allired in a. showy military uniform, and was mutinied on a while charger, willf black and gold trappings. He looked just “it,'’ and carried out hiduties admirably. ' Aland! representing “Japan," Air Harper’s car. decorated in the National colours, containing a.- jiassengers a soldier and his bride. Tim decorated tradesmen's earls were real works of a iT, and were represented by Afcssrs T. Rimmer (2) and Air Oxley. L'pon arrival al the ground, the decorative events were judged by Mrs Frank Robinson and Messrs Hornhlow, Rainc, Kcliow and W. E. Barber. He urged them to make the objective of their fund £5,011(1. He said it was the duty of all to see that those who had gone forth to fight for us should be well looked after on their return, that
their dependents should likewise be amply provided for. Air Nash said Palmerston would only be too pleased to-assist Buxton in its efforts on behalf of the Sick and Wounded bunds.
Mr Chryslall paid a fine tribute to Palmerston's Mayor, and said Palmerston was indebted to Fox ton for its Mayor, for they looked upon Mr Nash as a Fuxton hoy. The Mayor referred to. the object ot the Carnival, and paid a tribute to those on land and sea who were fighting for the Empire,-liberty and righteousness. He thanked all who had in any way assisted to make the Carnival such a huge success it was a- record affair in the history uf Fusion, and he was sure that .(.Tdil would ho realised as the result of their efforts.
The visiting performers wore subsequently entertained after the performance, and in this connection mention must be made ol Me-.dames W. E, Barber, Ale. Murray and J lornblow, and Mr O’Brien, who having spent a strenuous’day at the Carnival, were untiring in their hospitalil\ In Ibe visitors, Sergl,-iMajor Rarclmm acknowledged the hospitable on beimli' of the visitors.

A large amount of praise is due (o (he racecourse keeper, Air L. Procter, for the way (he course was arranged, and his unfailing willingness to help all and sundry. 'flic Maoris had a great day.
