Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MAY 31, 1917. FOXTON RAILWAY SERVICE.
AT the .Palmerston Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday night last, the Mayor, Mr J. si. Nash, referred to (he altered Poxton railway service, especially the departure of the Poxton train from Palmerston on Saturday evening's at 5.35, instead of, as formerly, at 8.5 o’clock. According to our Palmerston morning contemporary, Mr Mash said that the Saturday night service was most unsatisfactory, and some action should be taken in the matter. He would like to see a committee or a sub-committee set up by (lie Chamber which would lodge a protest to the Department, urging it to lake action, A great number of Pox ton people came up to Palmerston on Saturdays, and much business was transacted, but muter the present arrangements a a-cry short time could be spent in Palmerston. The alteration of the Monday time-table olfeeling the arrival of the Poxton train, which came into Palmerston at 0.35 a.m., would be of inconvenience in summer time to Palmerstunians spending week-ends at Poxton beach. Mr lloddcr pointed out,” continues our contemporary’s report, “that the present time-table was only for the winter mouths, and would be altered in the summer. Mr Nash moved that Messrs Hodder, ■Johnston, Preneh and himself he a sub-eonnnittee to go into the matter, The motion was carried unanimously.” 31 S * * WE would ask the Poxton public what they think of the foregoing? Is the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce to be allowed to dictate Poxtou’s railway service to the Department 1 Mr Nash says that the present Saturday night service is most unsatisfactory. Unsatisfactory to whom? We can tell Sir Nash that the new Saturday night train arrangement meets with general local public approval. It is absolutely satisfactory, and a greater public convenience than the late Saturday night train —put on to meet the convenience of imaginary Palmerston week-enders, Mr Nash is boosting for Palmerston tradespeople, and the convenience of the local public doesn’t enter his head. If the Poxton public is to be made a door mat of by the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce ail power to Palmerston for their enterprise. But
we think on this occasion the Foxton people will have something to say to the Department, and we hope the Mayor will convene a public meeting without delay and put an end once and for all to Palmerston’s wire-pulling with the Department in,connection with our railway service. The Palmerston Chamber of Commerce has shown its hand, and if is for Fox)on to make the next move, and that without loss of time.
