ALLEGED THEFT OF A COFFIN.

AX UNUSUAL CASE. At the local police court yesterday morning, before Messrs Chrystall and Hornhlow, J’s.P., William Healey was charged by H. W. Richmond, undertaker, with the theft of a coffin, valued £l, from his premises, Avenue Road, on May sth. Accused pleaded not guilty. Informant stated that accused called on him and asked for a coffin for his deceased child- Told accused that the price would he £1 cash. The coffin was made, and was taken away from complainant's premises without the latter’s knowledge or consent. Complainant said accused had not paid for the coffin, and lie was about to leave (lie district. Hi* had wailed for payment, hut accused had not been near him. In reply to the Bench, complainant said Healey bad ordered the coffin, and although complainant was on (he premises, accused had taken the coffin without consiilling him. Accused denied that Richmond had mentioned that it was to be a cash transaction. He called for the coffin, which was urgently rerpiircd, and Richmond was not on the premises, and (he coffin was left in a prominent place at the shop. He handed, the money to complainant in court. The case was dismissed.
