SPEAKING nt tlie National Liberal Club in London recently, Sir -Joseph Ward, in a brief reference to the Irish problem said that in (.he interests not alone of the .Empire, but of the world's civilisation, the question called for prompt settlement. It was a running and dangerous sore at the very heart of the Empire and extended to the countries beyond it, and it should be healed without delay. He felt convinced (hat an etfective and lasting settlement could and should lie made, and no effort be spared to bring two conflicting parties together," and by mutual concession establish a Parliament for Ireland, with full local autonomy to work out in (Ids respect her own destiny. Sitch a course was essential to bring still closer the unity and solidarity of t he Empire, and it certainly would help to win the war.
