NEWSPAPERS, AND THE WAR.
THE outlook for the* newspaper world in this dominion is not 100 bright. Already eertain country papers have had to cease publication, while others, 'in order to husband paper supplies, are publishing' three times a week. Merchants cannot promise anything as to future supplies. Indeed, paper supply contracts have been cancelled, and the price of the limited supply of paper which is imported has soared up enormously. If things don’t improve in the near future paper will have to be economised by the reduction in size of news-sheets. The increase in the cost of newspapers does not appear to have reduced the circulation to (he extent anticipated. The recent commandeering of Canadian ships hits Australia and New Zealand hard, because it is from Canada that tbfl principal supplies of printing paper now come. The Canterbury Times, the oldest weekly journal in the Canterbury province, and the Evening News will shortly suspend publication, in order to save men and material during the war period. The proprietors consider the sacrifice necessary in promoting national efficiency. The Canterbury Times belongs to the Lyttelton Times Co., and the News to the Press Co., and it is by an amicable arrangement between the (wo companies that each has dropped a publication. Thus is the war hitting the newspaper folks, and it Avill hit them harder still presently if Germany is not beaten soon.
