Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1917. THE COMING CARNIVAL.

THE public meeting held in the Council Chambers last night to discuss the holding of a sports carnival on the King's Birthday (Monday, dune 4th), in aid of the Sick and Wounded Soldiers’ Fund, was a very enthusiastic and representative gathering. The Mayor, by his own enthusiasm, inspired others with a similar spirit, and although the time is short to make preparations, the sub-committees set up will easily overcome all obstacles. Another feature of the meeting was the tine spirit evinced by (he ladies. There was no backing and tilling, but they consented to work, and that straight away—and when the Foxton women set out to do anything, they do it thoroughly. Another pleasing feature Avas the attendance of district residents, who evinced a keen interest in the business of the evening. The local State school children, under the supervisison of Mr Jackson, head teacher, Avill provide and conduct a produce stall, while the ladies will supervise luncheon and afternoon tea. The programme will consist of horse, athletic and novel events, Avhich should keep the public fully interested and amused. The whole affair will constitute one of the biggest out-door attractions yet held locally, and given a line day there should be a record attendance. The effort will conclude with a concert in the Town Hail. It noAv remains for the public to render all the assistance it can in the Avay of donations and gifts to ensure a record success. In this connection several substantial donations have already been promised and the energetic secretary, Rev. W. Raine, will’ be pleased to receive and acknowledge further donations. The object .of the Carnival is to raise funds for our sick and wounded soldiers, and should appeal to all. It is hoped that a record sum will be raised for this deserving object.
